Our culture idolizes being in a relationship… But what does the Bible say about this?

First off, complete joy and fullness of life, thriving, is found in Jesus Christ alone! Above any friendship, career goal, and future dream, above it all, is Jesus Christ. Your foundation and confidence should be found in Jesus Christ first before anything… let alone before you enter into a romantic relationship. If you are not fully confident in your relationship with Jesus, then you are not ready to be in a pure, romantic relationship according to Scripture’s standards. You will more likely be inclined to compromise worldly views and habits for relationships if you’re not yet strong in your relationship with Jesus. God designed relationships to be beautiful, holy, pure, and to reflect Him. Why would you settle for less?

Song of Songs is a beautiful book in the Bible written by two people in love with one another. They write to each other to express their deep love. This beautiful love story reflects the immense love God has for us. Sometimes the narrative is the woman writing to the man, and vice versa. Within the context of chapter 1 of Song of Songs, the audience is the daughters of Jerusalem. Song of Songs 1:5 (NIV)

The woman states, “Your name is like perfume poured out. No wonder the young women love you!” Song of Songs 1:3 (NIV) She is describing the man here. The woman is clearly in love with him. She later says, “We rejoice and delight in you” when referring to the man. Song of Songs 1:4 (NIV) The Hebrew for “you” is masculine in this verse. The woman rejoicing over this man is similar and beautiful to how we rejoice in Jesus and our salvation!

The man later states, “Oh how beautiful”, regarding the woman. Song of Songs 1:15 (NIV)

He is physically attracted to the woman here. After reading this chapter, I gained some insight into what Christian girls should be looking for in a spouse according to Scripture. Here is a list I came up with!

What a Christian girl should be looking for in a Christian spouse, and some questions to ask yourself…

  1. Standard: He needs to be a strong Christian man
  2. Question: How will he lead you as a Christian woman if he is not being led by the Lord?
  3. Question/Standard: Is there physical attraction between you and someone you’re interested in? If numbers 1 and 2 are met, you can look at 3. I think it is important in a healthy relationship to be physically attracted to your partner.

I hope this helps! Keep up with all my videos, podcast content, and future blogs to gain Biblical insight on romance!
